Contemporary extension to locally listed house
We were appointed to advise a couple that had recently bought this house as their new family home. They were interested in seeing options for how the building could be extended and better connected to the garden, how the street presence of the modest house could be improved, and options for increasing the energy efficiency and comfort in the renovated house.
We explored options for side extensions and rear extensions, carefully considering the chances of gaining planning approval and the likely construction budget.
As the building is locally listed we consulted very thoroughly with the local authority and conservation officer. The planning application was quickly approved.
The proposal, as now built, includes two traditionally styled two storey extensions to either side of the original house. A large, single storey, contemporary extension to the rear, accommodates a specious and light family room and kitchen, linked to a new terrace and the garden by large sliding doors.
- Services: Full services; Design, planning, building regulations, tender and contract administration of the construction site
- Location: Chelmsford, Essex
- What we love: We were careful to ensure original features such as brick details, brick bonding, a moulded brick string course, were matched in the traditional extensions. The brick bonding followed through in the contemporary extension, and creates a beautiful contract with the white self coloured render.
